FEUGA organises the presentation webinar of the pilot project BIOPROINSECT

13/06/2022

The event is free (previous registration), online and will take place next Tuesday 21st of June, at 10a.m.

Initiated in 2021 with a total budget above €180,000, BIOPROINSECT is a Galician pilot project whose objective is to obtain new highly added value products through the mealworm (T. molitor) bioprocessing.

Mealworm has been positively assayed as novel food by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), which sets the starting point to a complete revolution in the food sector. With more than 50% content in protein and a minimum environmental impact in its production, the sector bets on insects to face the increasing demand on highly nutritive value foods. Nevertheless, insect’s protein is united to chitin, a structural compound which limits protein’s digestibility.

With the development of an innovative and highly efficient enzymatic process, BIOPROINSECT seeks to separate the chitin. Thus, this process will obtain, from mealworm, highly digestible proteins, fatty acids and chitin derivatives.

In the webinar, representatives of the participant companies (Galinsect, the Universidade the Vigo group BiotecnIA and FEUGA), will expose how this novel and innovative enzymatic process is being developed. Furthermore, the viability and potential of the initiative will be presented. A pioneer initiative that will set Galicia at the foremost of the agri-food innovation.

BIOPROINSECT is funded by grants to support pilot projects, development of new products, processes and technologies in the agri-forestry scope, co-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for the Rural Development (EAFRD), in the framework of the 2014-2020 Galician Rural Development Program (RDP). Total budget: €181,468.56; total grant: €145,174.85.

The Consellería do Medio Rural is the Galician Administration authority responsible for proposing and executing the general guidelines in the rural scope and encompasses powers in agriculture, livestock, rural development, and regional planning, rural structures, agri-food, and forestry industries, mountains, and prevention and defence against forest fires.
