From poultry waste to energy resource, valorising the droppings generated in poultry farms (meat and egg production) to obtain a source of renewable energy, fertilisers and components for the use of nutrients in the soil. These are the main objectives of AVIENERGY, the new supra-autonomous Operational Group comprising the regions of Galicia, Castilla y León and Murcia, which has funding of more than half a million euros from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, within the framework of the National Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.
Thus, this innovative project seeks a more efficient use of resources in the poultry sector by applying a strategy based on the fundamentals of the circular bioeconomy, enabling a more efficient use of the most abundant waste such as poultry manure, chicken manure and poultry manure, to improve the competitiveness and environmental impact of the sector.
Through its combustion, the aim is to obtain thermal energy that can be used to meet the existing heat demand on farms. The ashes produced during combustion will be considered a valuable by-product that can be applied directly to the soil to make use of the existing nutrients, favouring the growth of crops. In addition, AVIENERGY will analyse the feasibility of implementing a micro-cogeneration system based on an organic Rankine cycle to obtain electrical energy that can be used on the farm itself. This innovative solution would make it possible to reduce the energy dependence of farms.
In this project participate as members the Fundación Empresa Universidad Gallega (FEUGA), representative of the Operative Group, and Energylab, Demaux Manufacture S.L., Granja José Antonio García, Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura (CEBAS-CSIC), Universidad de Vigo, Avícola El Charcón and Alimentos del Mediterráneo S.Coop (ALIMER). UVESA and the Alimer Foundation will be collaborating members.
